“The Century Project is the culmination of a journey begun a dozen years ago, when I started researching the evolution of the drums and the way we play them. Through my research, I came to a startling conclusion: if we understand more about the drum set, we can understand the origin of every style of popular music we play and listen to today: jazz, rock, blues, hip-hop, funk, reggae, etc. To learn more about my research, click here.
Over time, I took all this research and turned it into a clinic presentation. The clinic takes audiences on a 100-year thrill ride, from 1865 at the end of the Civil War right up to 1965 and the dawn of the British Invasion. It shows how drums and pop music evolved hand-in-hand, and how, by 1965, the drumming blueprint that we still follow to this day had been cemented.
In turning The Century Project into a DVD, my goal is to create a compelling, multi-media, interactive, lecture/performance that takes the typical (dare I say “boring”) conception of “history,” and turns it on its ear. Memphis Drum Shop is proud to present Royal Crown Revue/Brian Setzer drummer Daniel Glass and Memphis drumming legend J.M. Van Eaton, together in a rare and intimate event focusing on Rockabilly and Early Rock’n’Roll drumming. This event will be broadcast live over the internet, allowing drummers from around the world to participate in real time.
In the 1950s and ’60s, J.M. Van Eaton was part of the Sun Records house band, playing on more than 2/3 of all the recordings ever released by the legendary Memphis label. His inventive drumming can be heard on many of Sun’s biggest hits, including those by Jerry Lee Lewis ("Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On," "Great Balls of Fire"), Johnny Cash ("I Guess Things Happen That Way"), Roy Orbison ("Devil Doll"), Billy Lee Riley ("Red Hot"), and Charlie Rich ("Lonely Weekends").
Daniel Glass is one of today’s foremost authorities on classic American drumming.
